To coincide with Earth month and our first ever natural box, we wanted to write a blog post to help you make better decisions with your beauty routine. It does take more effort to be eco-friendly but as we’re all aware, it’s worth it and even the small things make a difference!
Here are some tips on how you can change up your routine to help protect the environment.
Hair
Try making your own hair masks!
Did you know Jojoba Oil is great for unruly curls and for moisturising dry and damaged hair? It’s a common ingredients in lots of luxury hair products and it can be used on it’s own too. Massage a few drops of pure Jojoba oil into wet hair, place a shower cap on and leave for 15-30 minutes. Afterwards, shampoo twice with clarifying shampoo and skip the conditioner.
Another one is the Egg Mask. This may sound strange, but it works like a dream! Take 3 raw eggs and mix in a bowl with an essential oil of your choice. Apply all over the hair and leave for 15-30 minutes. Don’t cover this one or you may heat the eggs and end up with scrambled egg on your head! Rinse and lather up twice with clarifying shampoo and skip the conditioner.
When it comes to styling, us Brits love using heat, but as I’m sure you’re all aware this is NOT good for the environment. There are some ways to achieve a gorgeous look without using any electricity. Forget the tongs, did you know you can curl your hair using an old ripped up t-shirt?! We stumbled upon this video by Michelle Phan that explains step-by-step how to achieve the gorgeous curly look. Have a go and let us know if you manage to do it!
Face
Try to be sensible when picking your cleansers and moisturisers, a lot of products these days have chemicals in that damage the environment. Try avoiding parabens, sulphates, triclosan and fragrances. Instead opt for natural ingredients such as lemon, avocado, tea tree and aloe.
A natural ingredient that’s great for moisturising the body and face is Coconut Oil, it’s also great for removing makeup!
With lip products, try and avoid product that include lead, synthetic colouring, lanolin or petrolatum in the ingredients. Instead try to find products that use shea butter, beeswax and fruit pigments.
You can make good environmentally friendly decisions when buying makeup brushes too! There are many brands that use bamboo to make their brushes and this is great as it’s sustainable. You can also try buying brushes with synthetic hair instead of animal (natural) hair.
We all know how convenient makeup removing wipes are, but they are definitely not good for the environment. There are so many great cleansers out there, why not try using a washable muslin cloth. They are affordable, reusable after washing and much better for your skin!
Multi-purpose products are also a great way to prevent wastage. Try Bobbi Brown’s ‘Pot Rouge’ for the lips and cheeks!
Body
Try making your own products; there are so many recipes online! An easy body scrub is half a serving of olive oil and half a serving of sugar. Mix together and voila, you have a body scrub!
How many bottles of shower gel do you think you go through a year? Think of all the plastic… this can be easily avoided by simply using a good old fashioned bar of soap!
It’s the little things that help and I’m sure there is something on this list that you could give a try! We hope you do and please let us know.
